Hume Castle

The Chairman of the Trustees of Hume Castle, who is also the Convenor of the Clan Home Association, would like to bring to the attention of all Flodden 1513 stakeholders and followers the Trust’s wish that Hume Castle should be used as a principal basis for assessing the impact of a proposal to extend the wind farm at Fallago Rig in the Lammermuirs.  In addition, the Trust is concerned that the number of such developments threatens to destroy the landscape value of an important historical heritage.

Senior archaeologists from the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) are commencing the first UAV survey ever conducted, an idea proposed by them with the full support of Historic Scotland. They appreciate even before conducting these radar type surveys that Hume Castle has a huge amount of uncovered interest that has been lying beneath the surface since Oliver Cromwell’s artillery destroyed the Castle and the then village of Home (now Hume) in 1651.

They are already certain from their initial work that this survey will be the first stage in revealing what the 12th century castle really looked like before its destruction. This has huge implications for future tourist interest from all over the world.  The Trusteesalready have major plans for greatly improving the educational and historical resources available, through professionally written and illustrated historical display panels.  Negotiations are under way on longer term plans for the creation of a museum of the history of Hume Castle and the Home/Hume family in the village.

The Trustees are concerned that, all the while, more and more wind farms are appearing quite close to the castle and in the nearby Lammermuir Hills. These are all too clear from the inside and outside of the Castle.  They recognize that as a result their plans to enrich the knowledge of the fascinating history of the Merse are being potentially ruined by the growing industrialisation of the priceless landscape of Berwickshire, Roxburghshire and the Cheviots.

Their view is that, in effect, one major Scottish authority (Historic Scotland) is finding itself at loggerheads with those who wish to promote and build wind farms.

The Trustees have therefore suggested to Scottish Borders Council that Hume Castle should be used as a viewpoint for photographic survey work to be done in assessing the proposal to extend the wind farm.   Hume Castle would be the key base of the assessment of historical landscape.  As the owners of Hume Castle, they wish to have a fair chance of standing up for Scotland’s rich but vulnerable heritage.

The Chairman would be pleased to suggest ways in which Flodden 1513 stakeholders and followers, should they wish, could help the Association in its negotiations on behalf of the castle.  Please contact Gospatric Home, Chairman Hume Castle Trust and Convenor of the Clan Home Association:   or write to him at Lily Farm, Parslows Hillock, Princes Risborough, Bucks.
