A museum is usually a building that contains lots of old and interesting objects but an ecomuseum is very different. An ecomuseum is a museum without walls. There is no roof either... just the sky above it. It’s a place where you can discover and explore historical sites in the landscape. Together these sites tell a story - the story of The Battle of Flodden.
The Ecomuseum offers excellent opportunities for cross-curricular, outdoor learning encouraging pupils to use critical thinking skills, creativity and interpretation. For schools in Northumberland and the Scottish Borders ‘Flodden’ can be an exciting and engaging local history topic.
Visits to key Ecomuseum sites such as Etal Castle, Norham Castle and Flodden Field can inspire pupils and enhance their learning.
“...it was excellent seeing the children transfer what they had been learning in the classroom to what they were seeing, it really brought the whole topic alive and made what they’re learning relevant.”
Class teacher’s comments following a visit to Etal Castle, Heatherslaw Mill and Flodden Field.
